A millet festival and awareness programme on millet production and its benefits was organised today by ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ri-bhoi, at Umwang Them Village, attracting 60 farmers, along with the headmen of Umwang Them and Purduwa villages. The event, which is part of the ongoing Krishi Swarna Samriddhi Week, will conclude on March 21st, 2025.
The initiative aims to motivate local farmers to boost agricultural productivity, increase their income, and improve livelihoods through millet cultivation. During the event, an exhibition showcased various millet varieties such as finger millet, foxtail millet, and pearl millet. Additionally, processed millet products, including porridge, pitha, idli, samosas, steamed snacks, and kheer, were displayed, highlighting the versatility of millets in culinary use.
Dr B.P. Singh, Head, DTAC, ICAR Umiam, emphasized the health benefits of cultivating and consuming millets.
The event successfully promoted the role of millets in sustainable agriculture and healthy nutrition, encouraging farmers to embrace this ancient grain as part of their farming practices.
