Emphasising that millets should be used to address the malnutrition among children and anaemic issues with women, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology Member-Secretary S. Vincent said that with numerous innovations, the nutritive benefits should reach the needy people in the society.
He was speaking at the inaugural of the C-MILES (Centre for Millet-based Livelihood Enhancement and Sustainability) and a three-day hands-on training programme on ‘Value-addition and entrepreneurial skill development for SC and ST,’ at the Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College here on Tuesday
Speaking about the significance of being an entrepreneur, Dr. Vincent said that by training the aspirants, the entrepreneurs would be skilled and informed about the richness of the millets.
The value-addition of the produce was very important in today’s competitive world.
The experts and resource persons with the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology would deliberate on the nuances of the millets to the participants in the next two days (January 29 and 30), he said and thanked the college management for extending its support in establishing the C-MILES.

The participants for this innovative programme have been meticulously selected from the adopted village of Mannar Thirumalai College and from contacts with NGOs run by former students.
These individuals would receive comprehensive training, starting from the basics of collecting the right raw materials to mastering the market space and excelling in selling their products.
The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology conducted a comprehensive mapping of the livelihoods of marginalized communities. By analysing the geographical resources and constraints faced by these communities, TNSCST has effectively intervened using science and technology to bridge gaps.
This initiative, aiming at empowering individuals as both employers and employees, and ensuring sustainable development and growth, should move forward, the speakers said.
